Column definitions

  • MSR — my rating: the same résumé solver as the FBS board, run over every FCS-vs-FCS game. #1 = best.
  • SoS — strength of schedule: mean rating-rank of the opponents played. #1 = toughest.
  • SOR — strength of record: how impressive the record is given that schedule. 100 = a résumé an average top-25 FCS team would rarely match.
  • PPG / PA — points scored and allowed per game, across every game played.
  • Succ% — success rate: the share of plays that stay on schedule. The most predictive single stat in my model — ahead of yards, ahead of points. Lower is better on defense.
  • Expl — explosiveness rank: how much an offense gains on the plays that do succeed.
  • Havoc — share of plays a defense wrecks: TFLs, forced fumbles, picks, passes defended.
  • Rec / Conf — overall record, and conference games only.

How the field is built

The FCS playoff takes 24 teams: 10 automatic bids (one per conference champion) and 14 at-large. The top 8 are seeded and receive a first-round bye; the other 16 play eight opening-weekend games.

  • This is MSR's field, not the committee's. Conference champions take the automatic bids; the at-large places then go to the highest-rated eligible teams. No committee, no polls.
  • Auto-bid conferences — Big Sky, Big South-OVC, CAA, MVFC, NEC, Patriot, Pioneer, Southern, Southland, UAC. Champion = best conference record, ties broken by rating.
  • Not eligible — the Ivy League does not take part in the playoff at all, and the SWAC and MEAC champions play the Celebration Bowl instead. Those teams are excluded even when they rate highly.
  • First round pairings are highest-remaining against lowest-remaining. The real committee also applies a 400-mile travel rule and avoids regular-season rematches, which is not modelled here.
